How we can help
Lymphatic drainage for lymphoedema is a therapeutic approach aimed at reducing swelling and managing the symptoms associated with this condition. Lymphoedema is a chronic condition characterized by the accumulation of lymphatic fluid, usually in the arms or legs, due to a compromised or damaged lymphatic system.
The lymphatic system plays a crucial role in maintaining fluid balance and immune function in the body. When the lymphatic vessels are unable to adequately remove excess fluid, lymphodema can occur. This can be caused by various factors, including surgery, radiation therapy, infection, trauma, or congenital conditions.
Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a specialized massage technique used in lymphoedema management. It involves gentle, rhythmic movements and precise hand placements to redirect excess fluid and stimulate the lymphatic system's functioning. The primary goal of MLD is to encourage the reabsorption of accumulated fluid and reduce swelling.
During a session of lymphatic drainage for lymphoedema, our trained therapist applies gentle pressure and specific manual techniques along the lymphatic pathways. These techniques aim to redirect stagnant fluid toward functioning lymph nodes and alternate pathways, enhancing fluid circulation and drainage.
The therapist starts by clearing the proximal lymphatic areas (nearest to the trunk) to create space for fluid movement and gradually progresses towards the affected limb or area. This process helps to alleviate swelling, improve lymphatic flow, and reduce the risk of complications associated with lymphodema, such as infections.
In addition to MLD, compression therapy, exercise, and skincare are integral components of comprehensive lymphoedema management. Compression garments, bandages, or wraps are often used to provide external support and maintain the reduction achieved through lymphatic drainage. Exercises prescribed by a therapist can help enhance lymphatic flow and muscle pump action. Proper skincare, including moisturizing and avoiding skin irritants, is crucial to prevent infections and maintain skin health, which is essential for individuals with lymphoedema.
